Compare two layers or two Gerber files

One often needs to compare two stages of a design and see the differences.
In ViewMate and ViewMate Deluxe this can only done via visual inspection(see more details below).
ViewMate Pro has a tool that will automatically compare two sets of layers. It is "Tools/Compars Layers/Find Differences". If differences are found one can then steps through all of them using a convenient navigation tool. The settings for the layers compare tool are shown below:

In ViewMate and ViewMate Deluxe (which don't have this tool) you need to do a visual inspection. This can be done by setting the layer colors for the two layers to examine to contrasting colors (red and green work well for this - if set this way where the two layers match the displayed color will be yellow, so whenever you see red or green you know that those parts exist in only one of the layers).
You need to make visible only the two layers that you are investigating (if there are more than two layers loaded). You can do this by using the Layers Toolbar: right click on the layer and check or uncheck "Visible".
If you want to compare two sets of layers, let us say layer 1 through 3 versus layers 5 through 7, set the colors for layer 1, 2 and 3 to red and for 5, 6 and 7 to green (or other contrasting colors that you prefer). This can best be done in the "Setup/Layers" dialog (F10). Select the first group by clicking on the "L#" button for the first layer in the group, then Shift+click on the button for the last layer in the group. Finally double click on the color box and pick a color. This will set the color picked for all layers in the group. See image below:

Repeat for the second group of layers.

It is useful to also set the board layer numbers ("B Layer") to be the same for matching layers. So layer 1 and 5 will have board layer number 1, 2 and 6 board layer 2 and so on. This will allow you to conveniently step through pairs of layers in the main view by using the shortcuts "Ctrl+Shift+PlusKey" for going forward and "Ctrl+Shift+BackSpace" for going backwards.

What is the reason for seeing more than 10,000 errors?
